Will memory care help me?

Changes in memory can occur as we age. It can be normal to occasionally forget about an appointment or have difficulties concentrating in a noisy environment. However, degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, a type of dementia, can lead to changes in overall cognitive function and a loss of independence. At Advantage Therapy Services, we help our patients prolong their independence and support both the patient and family members through the therapy process.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a spectrum of chronic neurological disorders that damage brain structures and lead to many different problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. It’s important to remember that dementia isn’t tied to one cause or factor; it’s the result of complex degeneration within the brain that causes multiple symptoms. Not every symptom progresses the same way in each person, making diagnosis difficult.

If you have already been diagnosed with dementia or another memory-related condition, our specialists will provide a unique care plan based on your diagnosis.

What does Memory Care for Dementia Look Like?

Our speech pathologists will help you and your family get the support you need after a diagnosis of dementia. We will walk you through the symptoms, choices, and support programs available to people living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

First, we need to determine how you’re already doing and identify what areas could use a little extra help. Is it getting harder to remember things? Do you experience difficulties with word finding or feel like you know what you want to say but the words just won’t come out? How are you coping with events that might be stressful or cause anxiety? Do you have trouble reading the newspaper, or remembering birthdays and appointments?

Next, we will establish goals that are right for you. We will review everything together and develop a memory care program to help you maintain your independence and support memory function.

We will also provide extensive caregiver training to create the best environment for memory function at home and provide you with personalized home program activities.
